Hopf algebras and characters of classical groups

Abstract. Schur functions provide an integral basis of the ring of symmetric functions. It is shown that this ring has a natural Hopf algebra structure by identifying the appropriate product, coproduct, unit, counit and antipode, and their properties. Characters of covariant tensor irreducible representations of the classical groups GL(n), O(n) and Sp(n) are then expressed in terms of Schur functions, and the Hopf algebra is exploited in the determination of groupsubgroup branching rules and the decomposition of tensor products. The analysis is carried out in terms of n-independent universal characters. The corresponding rings, CharGL, CharO and CharSp, of universal characters each have their own natural Hopf algebra structure. The appropriate product, coproduct, unit, counit and antipode are identified in each case.

Adjunctions between Hom and Tensor as endofunctors of (bi-) module category of comodule algebras over a quasi-Hopf algebra.
For a Hopf algebra H over a commutative ring k and a left H-module V, the tensor endofunctors V k - and - kV are left adjoint to some kinds of Hom-endofunctors of _HM. The units and counits of these adjunctions are formally trivial as in the classical case. The category of (bi-) modules over a quasi-Hopf algebra is monoidal and some generalized versions of Hom-tensor relations have been st...
متن کاملCharacter Theory for Semisimple Hopf Algebras
We study the induction and restriction functor from a Hopf subalgebra of a semisimple Hopf algebra. The image of the induction functor is described when the Hopf subalgebra is normal. In this situation, at the level of characters this image is isomorphic to the image of the restriction functor. A criterion for subcoalgebras to be invariant under the adjoint action is given generalizing Masuoka’...
متن کاملZero Divisors of Hopf Algebras: A Generalization of the Classical Zero-Divisor Conjecture
In an attempt to study the zero divisors in Hopf algebras, we study four non-trivial examples of nongroup ring infinite Hopf algebras and show that a variant of Kaplansky’s classical zero divisor conjecture holds for these four Hopf algebras. In particular we proof that the Hopf algebra CG has no non-trivial zero-divisors for any infinite finitely generated group G. We then consider the zero di...
